Confidence=slut. Why?

Everyone seems to think we have evolved--men and women are on and equal playing field, old rules don't apply yadda, yadda, yadda. As much as I would like to believe it, it's not the case. Enlightenment was found in a simple discussion about an episode of True Blood...who knew?

Yes I admit it--I'm addicted to True Blood I remember rolling my eyes three seasons ago when they were first promoting the show. I believe my comments went "Really another vampire show and it's set in the boonies of Louisana?!" A long weekend of kidsitting for someone who had HBO on-demand cured me of that perception. Although I was convinced I was in for bloody hillbilly hell, I now call True Blood trashy-amazingness and not to be missed. If you haven't seen it--do it! You will still see hillbillys and white trash, but somehow you won't mind it.

Now, with the amazingness precedent set, I must move on to how my addiction created a not so amazing reality check. Clearly I'm not the only individual watching this show, so it leads to frequent post-episode discussions with friends and acquaintances. Today I will be referencing Season 4, Episode 3, "If You Love Me, Why Am I Dyin'" (warning this snark will lead to spoilers) and the scene is between vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) and new character Portia Bellefleur (Courtney Ford). Portia is a smart, confident and extremely attractive attorney in Bon Temps, Louisiana. She is having a business dinner with Bill and decides to have a very direct conversation. Roughly this.... Portia "I'm hot and I know it...I'm picky (and I can be), so I only date and have sex with a certain type of man. Bill, you fit these qualities and I'm very interested in you--what is your response?" Bill's response: "I won't fall in love with you, but if you're ok with that..." Portia: "Sure am!" Bill: "Check please!" Why can't I manage to work out this kind of deal *Sigh* I thought the scene was fantastic and more importantly--HAWT!

So, here's where the reality check arrives--the reactions of others to this very same scene. I heard comments from both males and females saying they thought Portia was annoying, obnoxious, trashy, a slut and that Bill should just get rid of her. If the roles had been flipped and Bill had made the invitation would that have made it ok? Bill's character clearly didn't seem offended, so that makes me hope that there are people who found this scenario as great as I did. Why is it still not ok as a female to display traditionally been "male" behaviors of confidence and sexuality? We all like sex folks, so who the eff cares who does the asking? Really gentlemen? A woman just offered you no-strings-attached sex and you would say no? WRONG. Yet to watch a show where a woman is doing just that turns her into a slut.

The double standard still persists and is perpetuated by both sexes. Gals--seriously stop the girl on girl crime. You wish you had the lady-balls to successfully proposition a hot guy into an even hotter time in the sack. Guys--get rid of this virgin/whore dichotomy that you have for every woman you meet or see. It's really not helping you to get laid.
